Cars.com has been conducting a long-term test of a 2013 Civic LX sedan; we've driven more than 10,500 miles and it has averaged 31.9 mpg. The best we've seen on a tank of gas is 42.8 mpg and the lowest is 25.13 mpg. The EPA estimates for this automatic-transmission Civic are 28/39/32 city/highway/combined.

Initially, most of our driving was in the Chicago area, where dense traffic and variable weather conditions aren't often conducive to good gas mileage. The long-term test started in March, when Chicago's typically still-cold weather can take a toll on mileage. Over the summer, we stretched the Civic's legs on the highway and bumped its average mileage closer to the rated combined mileage.
