The Explorer has been built at Ford's Chicago assembly plant since December 2010. That's when this popular SUV switched to a car-based platform from its previous truck platform for the 2011 model year. The Chicago plant also produces the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans.


Before the move to the Chicago plant, the Explorer was built in Louisville, Ky., from its debut in 1989 until the end of 2010 and also in St. Louis for part of that period.
