What commuter car is fuel efficient and good in the snow?

What would you recommend for an 80-mile-a-day commute in Cleveland, where there's lots of lake-effect snow? Four- or all-wheel drive is a necessity. Fuel mileage is a factor as well.

Anthony, Youngstown, Ohio

Your closest Subaru dealer should have what you need: an Impreza sedan with standard all-wheel drive and the available continuously variable automatic transmission. With the CVT, the Impreza has EPA ratings of 27/36 mpg city/highway. In addition, the Impreza is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.

With those credentials, the Impreza earned a spot on Cars.com's list of 2013 Top Picks for Commuters, the only all-wheel-drive sedan to receive that honor.

If the Impreza isn't large enough for your needs, the Subaru Legacy sedan also would be a good choice. It has EPA ratings of 24/32 with the CVT, and it is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, meaning it passed the more stringent front crash test the IIHS added recently.
