Buick is considering a coupe based on the Opel Astra GTC, a two-door hatchback built by GM’s German subsidiary, according to recent media reports, though that apparently isn’t a done deal. The Buick Verano and Chevrolet Cruze are based on the same front-drive platform as the Astra, so this would make sense from the standpoint of adding a model that already has relatives in the U.S.

Another possibility for Buick is a convertible based on the Astra, the Opel Cascada, due for sale in Europe in 2013. That, however, seems to be a longer shot. Convertibles attract a lot of attention initially, but often there are not enough buyers to make them viable. The gossip mill also has Buick reviving the Riviera name on a coupe in the next few years.

Talk is cheap, however, and building a limited-volume coupe or convertible car is too expensive to undertake without a good chance of success. Perhaps that is why Buick is adding a turbocharged version of the Verano sedan for 2013, hoping to fill a sporty niche with an existing sedan instead of adding a new body style that may sell in small numbers.
