The current RAV4's spare tire is mounted outside on the rear, and a liftgate would require really strong support struts to hold that much weight in the raised position. It would also require a lot of strength to close it.
Industry observers expect Toyota to unveil a redesigned RAV4 this fall or early in 2013, and spy shots of prototypes making the rounds indicate that the spare tire has been relocated inside or under the vehicle. Though it isn’t clear whether the new model has a liftgate or side-opening swing gate (Toyota isn’t saying), a liftgate would put the new RAV4 in line with the mainstream of crossover SUVs.
