The 2012 Jeep Liberty, which can tow up to 5,000 pounds with an optional towing package, is the most muscle-bound vehicle in the large field of compact SUVs. Other small SUVs can tow 3,500 pounds or less.
The Liberty has a compact overall length of about 176 inches, a couple of inches shorter than the 2013 Ford Escape or Toyota RAV4, but with four-wheel drive it may require a higher step-up into the interior than some other smaller SUVs. That is something you might want to check out.
Among smaller SUVs that can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped are the Chevrolet Equinox and similar GMC Terrain, the Kia Sorento, and the Escape and RAV4.
