We are in the market for luxury sports sedan. Audi and BMW are on our radar. With average reliability ratings in the past, especially the older models, do you think the new Audi A6/S6, BMW 550i or the Mercedes-Benz E-Class deserve our attention in terms of reliability and fun?
Of the three luxury sedans you mentioned, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class would seem to be your best choice based on reliability. The E-Class ranked second in its class in the last two J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability studies, which measure problems in the third year of ownership. It was the only midsize luxury car to post back-to-back podium finishes.
We don’t know what your idea of a good time is, so we will let you decide on the fun factor, but we hope you will include safety as a factor. The E-Class is a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, another reason to give it strong consideration. The Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series also are Top Safety Picks.
You didn’t mention the Hyundai Genesis, but we think you should add it to your list. It’s available with a choice of potent V-6 or V-8 engines, offers features and refinement on the same level as the luxury brands (but at a lower price), and it is an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Moreover, it also had the fewest problems among midsize luxury cars in the 2012 Vehicle Dependability Study. That is why it is one of our Best Bets.
