The full LED headlights available on several Audi models do not necessarily project light farther than halogen or xenon headlights because that is limited by government regulations, Audi says. LEDs are brighter and cast light that is closer to daylight than other types, making them easier on the eyes for oncoming drivers.
The biggest benefit of LEDs is reduced energy consumption — up to 80 percent less than halogen by some estimates, which is why LEDs are frequently installed on hybrid and electric vehicles. The cost compared to halogen and even xenon headlights is the biggest disadvantage of LEDs, so aside from hybrids and EVs, you find them mainly on luxury brands.
LEDs also last longer. Plus, they look cool. Audi says the compact size of LEDs allows more freedom in designing exterior lights because they can be arranged in different patterns to achieve ideal light distribution, brightness and appearance.
Audi offers full LED headlights on the A6, A7, A8 and R8 and LED daytime running lights and turn signals on those and other models.
