That honor goes to the Chevrolet Cruze, which impressed our test drivers with its serenity in the recent Under 20/Over 35 Shootout, which compared five compact cars that cost less than $20,000 and get more than 35 mpg on the highway.
The Cruze finished third overall behind the 2012 Honda Civic and top-rated Hyundai Elantra, but Cruze was the clear winner when it came to stifling road and engine noise, displaying a refinement level typically expected from a larger car. In addition to the Cruze’s ability to shield occupants from road noise, the car’s suspension was composed and absorbent over rough pavement. The Cruze lagged in rear seat room and comfort and in visibility due to its large roof pillars.
