Some sedans and coupes have a center armrest in the rear seatback that folds and provides access to a small section behind the seatback that opens and also folds. That creates an opening for long objects such as hockey sticks, skis or curtain rods that pass through from the interior to the trunk.

Though a pass-through to the trunk is handy for carrying some things, a folding rear seatback creates a much larger opening and allows carrying objects of different sizes and shapes. Among cars that have a pass-through to the rear seat are the Toyota Avalon, Kia Optima Hybrid and Hyundai Genesis.
