Hyundai says there will be a 2012 Veracruz with minor equipment changes but has not tipped its hand as to what will happen after that. Changes for 2012 include a new grille and 18-inch wheels, standard heated second-row seats for the Limited model and an Alpine navigation system as a new option. Prices should be announced in late August, and 2012 models should start showing up in September.
The Veracruz SUV was introduced for 2007 as a larger, more luxurious companion to the Santa Fe, on which it is based. Both are due for a redesign, but while the Santa Fe is a cinch to return, the Veracruz's future isn't as certain. Through May, calendar-year sales of the Santa Fe are 26,834, and Veracruz sales are just 3,189, so the Veracruz may be expendable.
The Veracruz seats seven, and the current Santa Fe only holds five. However, Santa Fe had a seven-passenger option for 2007 through 2009, so the next generation could offer that feature and fill the niche occupied by the Veracruz. Given the Veracruz's luxurious appointments, some industry observers believe Hyundai plans to replace it with an SUV that will be part of the Genesis lineup.
