When does it go on sale, and what's the mileage improvement over the base model?
Base prices on the diesel-powered Golf TDI (which is on sale now) are $23,225 for the two-door hatchback and $23,885 for the four-door, not including the $770 destination charge. That is a hefty $5,230 price premium over the gas two-door and $4,130 over the gas four-door.
In addition to the 2.0-liter diesel engine, TDI models come with more features, including a premium stereo with touch-screen controls, Bluetooth connectivity and 17-inch alloy wheels (instead of 15-inch steel), plus significantly higher fuel economy. TDI models have EPA mileage ratings of 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway with either manual or automatic transmission. For the 2.5-liter gas engine, mileage ratings are 23/33 mpg city/highway with a manual and 24/31 mpg with an automatic.
