An all-wheel-drive model is likely a good bet. Despite most taking a hit in the gas mileage department, some midsize models with all-wheel drive have respectable ratings, like the 2011 Subaru Legacy, 2011 Audi A4 and 2011 Suzuki Kizashi.

The Legacy four-cylinder, which has all-wheel drive standard, stands out with the best ratings of 23/31 mpg city/highway when optioned with the continuously variable automatic transmission. The CVT is a $1,000 option on base ($19,995) and Premium ($20,995) styles, though standard on Limited trims ($25,295).

With optional all-wheel drive, the Suzuki Kizashi is rated at 22/29 mpg and only comes with an automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive models start at $21,899.

For a more upscale feeling than the others, though in a smaller package, the Audi A4 with optional all-wheel drive ($32,850) rates at 21/29 mpg with optional automatic transmission ($1,290), and 21/31 mpg with standard manual transmission.
