A variety of hybrid and clean-diesel SUVs are rated to tow 5,000 pounds or more. The diesel options have the highest ratings, up to 7,700 pounds, though you won’t find highway mileage ratings above 26 mpg with either hybrids or diesels. Even so, with these towing capabilities, fuel economy is still notable compared with their gasoline counterparts.
Be prepared to drop some coin, as the least expensive of the bunch, the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg TDI, starts at $44,350. Helping offset the cost is a tax credit up to $1,800 for diesels and $2,200 for hybrids. The Touareg is rated with the highest towing capacity of the bunch at 7,716 pounds, followed by three diesel SUVs. The best fuel economy comes with the BMW X5 xDrive35d diesel at 19/26 mpg city/highway.
