Acura’s Technology Package is a $3,100 option on front- and all-wheel-drive models (starting at $32,520 and $34,520, respectively). The package adds a navigation system and premium sound system. It would be worth buying if you prefer an in-dash navigation system compared to a portable GPS unit, or are an audiophile looking for the better stereo option.
The RDX’s competition, Infiniti EX35 and Mercedes-Benz GLK350, offer similar packages and options. We prefer the usability of Infiniti and Mercedes' navigation systems compared to Acura's, however. The 2010
Infiniti EX35 has a Bose and Navigation package for $2,000, available
starting on its $36,000 Journey front-wheel-drive trim level.
Mercedes-Benz’s small SUV, the GLK350, starting at $34,600, has its
Multimedia Package with navigation and upgraded stereo for $3,350.
Features that come with Acura’s navigation system include voice recognition, real-time traffic and weather, plus restaurant reviews. Traffic and weather have a 90-day free trial before a paid subscription is required.
Advantages of an in-dash navigation system include better integration with the vehicle, less chance of theft and being able to lump the cost into your monthly payment. A disadvantage is the system’s high cost compared to a portable GPS. As an investment, however, in-dash navigation systems don’t typically help maintain resale value because the hardware is quickly outdated. For more pros and cons, see here.
