The 2010 Audi A4 recommends -- not requires -- premium gasoline. If you want to get maximum engine performance out of your A4 then you definitely want to fill up with the expensive stuff. Putting in a lower octane won’t harm the engine, but you won’t be able to take advantage the engine’s complete power potential.

Recommending premium is extremely common in luxury cars like the A4. There are some exceptions, however, like the Acura TL that requires premium and the Cadillac CTS that recommends regular gasoline.

For 2009, there are two A4 engine options that carry a premium gasoline recommendation: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 3.2-liter six-cylinder. For 2010, the six-cylinder is no longer offered; the turbocharged four-cylinder remains.
