Chevrolet recently announced that they expect the 2011 Volt plug-in electric to get 230 mpg in city driving. These numbers are preliminary, however, as General Motors and the EPA work together to create methodology for testing plug-in electric vehicles.
The Volt’s electric-only range is 40 miles. The highest mileage will likely come from owners who commute less than that per day; current hybrids can travel in electric power for only about a mile. To achieve the Volt’s maximum fuel economy, Chevrolet says the key is to charge the Volt daily.
If you plan to drive farther than 40 miles, you can expect a maximum range of 300 miles once the gasoline engine starts and recharges the batteries.
