Right now, there are two hybrid pickup trucks on sale: the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid ($38,020) and 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid ($38,390). Both trucks use a two-mode hybrid system that can drive on electric-only power or a combination of a gasoline V-8 engine and the electric motor.
The results are EPA gas mileage ratings of 21/22 mpg city/highway for two-wheel drive and 20/20 mpg for all-wheel-drive.
These hybrids aren’t just about fuel economy; they also have a 6,100-pound towing capacity. Non-hybrid pickups can tow more than that but not with the efficiency of the Silverado Hybrid and Sierra Hybrid. Our friends at PickupTrucks.com have towed with the 2009 Silverado Hybrid, and they walked away impressed by how well it handled a 5,000-pound load. You can read their first drive of the pickup here.

It's too bad that there isn't a light-duty hybrid pickup offered. Many of us never haul anything other than a toolbox or anything weighing more than 300-400 pounds in the box of the pickup truck. Others only pull a boat on a trailer infrequently.

I've also heard pretty good things about the Chevy, as far as hybrid trucks go (usually the "truck" market isn't as interested in hybrids). My environmental conscience also wants to points out ZAP's Xebra fleet, which a number of municipal agencies have their hands on. Despite being EVs, they're surprisingly powerful. My neighbor has one and digs it.
