Toyota hasn’t officially confirmed plans for mass production of a plug-in, but Japan’s Nikkei news reports Toyota will start producing 20,000 to 30,000 units of the plug-in Prius starting in 2012.

Toyota already planned to produce 500 examples of the plug-in Prius for U.S. lease-fleet customers starting in December, so it’s not improbable that a large number for other consumers would follow.

By 2012, the Chevrolet Volt should be on sale. If it stays true to its promise of 40 miles of electric-only driving for $40,000, the plug-in Prius will have to be very competitively priced, considering it’s predicted to go only 12-18 miles on a full charge. For more information, see our KickingTires article on the plug-in Prius.
