The program officially launches today, July 27, after being pushed back from its original launch date of “around July 24.” One automaker, Hyundai, has already been accepting eligible clunkers and handing out the $3,500 and $4,500 credits ahead of the official start date. It’s reported 7% of its sales in early July came from clunker trade-ins.
If you’ve determined your car is eligible for one of the credits and are ready to buy a new car, the dealership – which has to be a participating dealership -- does most of the legwork with the government. You need to bring a few crucial documents to the dealership, including one-year proof of insurance and registration and a title that’s clear of any liens. The manufacturer date must also be on the car to show it’s less than 25 years old.
For more information and to see if you’re eligible – or to check if the new car you’ve got your eye on is eligible, see our Cash for Clunkers content here.
