The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, our preferred source of crash tests, tested the Wrangler Unlimited four-door, scoring it Good — the agency’s highest rating — in frontal crash tests and Marginal in side (no side-impact airbags) and rear crash tests.
The Wrangler’s competition like the 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser and 2009 Nissan Xterra scored Good in IIHS’ side crash tests. The Wrangler doesn’t come with side-impact airbags standard; the FJ and Xterra do. The FJ is an IIHS’ Top Safety Pick, which requires scoring the agency’s best rating in front, side and rear protection crash tests and including an electronic stability system standard.
On the Wrangler, side-impact airbags are a $490 option and deploy from the front seats. The FJ and Xterra both include front, side-impact and side curtain airbags standard.
