All three compact SUVs are, in fact, assembled at the same manufacturing plant. The Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo., builds the Ford Escape, Mazda Tribue and Mercury Mariner. These vehicles are all closely related and share many components.
Before 2008 the Escape was included in our American-Made Index, which looks at sales, where a vehicle is assembled and how many of its parts are American-made to determine how American-made it is. When it was redesigned for 2008, the Escape’s domestic-parts content fell below our minimum requirement of 75 percent; it didn’t make the cut for the American-Made Index. The Escape’s domestic-parts content went from 90 percent in 2007 to 65 percent in 2008 and 2009.
