The 2010 Legacy’s best mileage comes when the 2.5i base model ($19,995, not including a $695 destination fee) is equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission, a $1,000 option. Rated by the EPA at 26/31 mpg city/highway, the sedan’s ratings are impressive considering it has standard all-wheel drive; a 2010 Ford Fusion with all-wheel drive is rated at 17/24 mpg.

If you don’t opt for the CVT, the 2.5i comes standard with a six-speed manual, which is also new for 2010. The six-speed manual replaces a five-speed manual transmission. Adding an extra gear is almost always a sure way to help improve gas mileage. The Legacy 2.5i sees a 2 mpg bump in city ratings over the 2009 model.
