A 60/40 rear bench is a folding rear bench seat. The configuration can be used on just about any type of vehicle — sedan, hatchback, truck, SUV and wagon — for increased cargo versatility.

The rear seat’s back rest will fold down to create an open area from the trunk to the passenger compartment. The seat commonly folds in a 60/40 or 50/50 split. Many prefer the 60/40 split because you can fold down the smaller side for additional cargo or longer items but still have plenty of room for a passenger in the larger space.

The 2009 Honda Civic (below) includes a 60/40 split on EX and EX-L models. The Civic comes standard with a one-piece folding rear seat.
