Out of the hardtop convertibles tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety – our preferred crash-test agency – two models earn the agency’s highest safety rating, the 2009 Volvo C70 and 2009 Volkswagen Eos.

With IIHS’ Top Safety Pick designation, both cars had to score the agency’s best overall safety rating of Good in front, side and rear crash tests. Top Safety Picks also must have an electronic stability system as standard equipment.

Not all hardtop convertibles have been tested at this time. Safety organizations tend to test high-volume cars, and convertibles aren’t typically volume sellers. The Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mercedes-Benz SLK and Mercedes-Benz SL have not been through IIHS’ rigorous testing.

Indeed it is true that 2009 Volvo C70 and 2009 Volkswagen Eos would emerge as the safest hardtop convertibles. We have been always happy with the performance of our Volvo C70.
