As we use it, standard is any equipment or feature that is included in a vehicle’s base list price.
The alternative is optional equipment. The word “standard” has been used in the past to describe a manual transmission. We do not use the word in this way on Cars.com, for good reasons. One meaning per word is always preferred, if rare in English, and manual transmissions have become so uncommon that the standard equipment is predominantly an automatic. Further, some vehicles that do offer both transmission types make the automatic standard equipment and the manual an option.
Information for this was taken from the Cars.com’s glossary, written by Joe Wiesenfelder.
