Toyota started including side curtain airbags as standard equipment on the 2008 4Runner. Along with the side curtain airbags, which drape across front and rear side windows in an accident to prevent head injuries, Toyota also added front-seat-mounted side-impact airbags as standard equipment in 2008.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash-tested the 2008 4Runner with Good front and side crash-test ratings (IIHS’ best score) but gave it a Poor rating for rear collisions (IIHS’ worst score).
