When did side curtain airbags and side-impact airbags become available, and what models have them? We want to buy a used car for our teen but want side-impact and side curtain airbags.
In today’s new car market, these two types of airbags are common in just about every segment. Side-impact and side curtain airbags hit the market in the mid-1990s. Volvo pioneered the side-impact airbags that deploy from the door or seat to protect an occupant’s side torso or head in a collision; BMW was the first to introduce side curtain airbags that drape over the window. Both of these airbags are standard equipment in the sub-$15,000 2009 Honda Fit.
Some used cars include side-impact and side curtain airbags as standard, although it’s less common than in newer models. Cars.com’s “Used Cars for Teens” article lists models that include side airbags as standard or optional equipment, including side torso, torso/head and side curtain airbags. I was in a car accident Oct. 19, 1999 & I suffer from a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). If & when anybody who reads this has connections with a car company, please tell them to start making their cars with at least 6 airbags because the car I was in didn't have airbags. Please open your wallet a little to make your cars much safer & in return you'll be making more money. Lets see which company can be the safest. Thank you.
