With the exception of the 2008 Chevrolet Uplander, which has been discontinued for 2009, all of the 2008 and 2009 minivans we’ve listed below have standard side curtain airbags in all three rows. In a side collision, curtain airbags drape over the windows from top to bottom to prevent occupants from hitting their heads on windows or frame pillars.

Of these minivans, only the Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Entourage and Kia Sedona scored the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick, which is the highest award the crash-test organization gives to vehicles. The Odyssey has also taken been a continual favorite in Cars.com's Lifestyle Awards. As of this writing, the Mazda5 is the only minivan not tested by IIHS.
