I see a Nissan Sentra S (4-cylinder, 2.0L CVT). What does the CVT mean?

I thought it was a package of options, but then I see things talking about the engine.

Mike C., Goodyear, Ariz.

Nissan’s CVT, which stands for for continuously variable transmission, is an automatic transmission in the 2008 Sentra. While it’s basically an automatic transmission, it drives differently than a traditional automatic, which is summarized here.

The regular Sentra comes with the CVT as standard, but in the Sentra S a six-speed manual transmission is standard. You’re looking at an $850 option to get the CVT automatic.
