A mid-engine vehicle is where the engine is located behind the seats but within the wheelbase. Vehicles in which the engine lies behind the rear axle are considered rear-engine.

Locating the engine between the seats and rear axle typically gives a car a more even front/rear weight distribution than the majority of front- and rear-engine designs. With its heaviest element relatively centered, the car is less prone to oversteer and understeer.

Current mid-engine vehicles include Porsche’s Boxster and Audi’s R8 supercar, while the Porsche 911 is a rear-engine design.
