The newly introduced 2009 Hummer H3T has either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic when teamed with the standard five-cylinder engine. With the available 5.3-liter V-8 engine, the sole transmission is a four-speed automatic.

If the H3 were equipped with a six-speed automatic — as Chevrolet and GMC do with the 5.3-liter in their XFE full-size truck trims — fuel economy would likely increase the H3T V-8’s current 13/16 mpg city/highway rating. But future plans for the Hummer brand are up in the air. General Motors has the off-road brand up for “strategic review,” which could include selling Hummer all together.

So it’s no surprise that product development might not be a full speed. When asked if a six-speed transmission is a future option for the H3T, a Hummer spokesman said that it’s not being considered at this time.
