There is a distinction between recommending and requiring premium gasoline, and premium fuel is, in fact, required for the redesigned 2009 Nissan Maxima. The 2009 Maxima owner’s manual cautions that if you have to use 87 octane, you should only fill the tank halfway and “avoid full throttle driving and abrupt acceleration.”

Some cars simply recommend premium for the best performance. In the Cars.com expert review of the 2009 Maxima, author Kelsey Mays writes,

“Nissan says premium fuel is required. Most luxury cars recommend or require premium, but many non-luxury full-sizers do not. Nissan says a diesel Maxima will arrive next year with projected mileage improvements of 20 percent to 30 percent. (Note that, as of this writing, the average national price of diesel fuel is $4.70 per gallon, which is 10 percent more than premium gas.)

Among six-cylinder sedans that cost around $30,000, here's how mileage compares:”

Since the Maxima has a CVT, you can use mid-grade, and you'd probably wouldn't notice a difference.

I'd use premium if I used the manumatic interface [paddles & selector stick] and full throttle.

Most luxury cars suggest or necessitate premium, but many non-luxury in full size do not. But for Nissan, yes it requires premium fuel. You can check out more information on different cars on http://www.zibe.com so that you will be aware of its requirements.

Just read the manual, and it clearly states that premium gas is recomended for 2009 nissan maxima.
