How does a young driver keep insurance low on a car?

I’m 18 years old and will be going to college in September.

Matt, Burlington

Young drivers have notoriously high insurance rates because, well, no matter how safe an individual is, the age group has higher accident rates due mostly to a lack of driving experience.

That doesn’t mean you’re condemned to pay higher rates, however, as some insurance companies reward young drivers with discounts for being accident-free and a good student. There also are safe driver programs that teens can participate in to earn lower rates. Contact your insurance agent for more information on similar programs.

The Cars.com Young Driver’s Guide outlines tips for young drivers, including insurance advice. Below you’ll find tips on automotive insurance discounts from the article, “Insurance Rates and Discounts.”
