I'm going to purchase either a 2005 Nissan Xterra or a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. If I wait until the new '09 models are on the dealers’ floors will the asking price come down?
Because the cars you’re considering are a few years old, you may not see as dramatic of a price cut as a newer 2008 car would experience when the 2009 models hit dealerships.
Cars.com editor Mike Hanley explains:
“I don’t suspect you’ll see a significant decrease when the 2009 models come out. The launch of a new model tends to only affect the price of the previous model year, in this case 2008 models. The decrease is usually amplified when the new model is a redesigned version, which tends to make its predecessor less appealing.
“Fuel prices, however, might cause both of the vehicles you’re considering to decline in value. With SUVs sitting on dealer lots as many consumers turn toward fuel-efficient cars, there will probably come a time (if it hasn’t happened already) where a dealer will sell an Xterra or Grand Cherokee at a lower price just to get it off the lot. My recommendation is to take your time, if you have that luxury, and watch prices in your area for a few months to see how the market is affecting those models. If you want to check a price against what Kelley Blue Book thinks the vehicle is worth, we have a valuation tool you can use, too.” See: http://www.cars.com/go/kbb/kbbInput.jsp

Will car prices actually generally drop for the year of 2009 because of the economy recession???
