With trucks and SUVs on a fire-sale, which ones do you recommend?

Which one offers the best mileage and carlike ride?

Al

The majority of SUVs and trucks are on a fire sale primarily because — if you haven’t figured out by now — fuel is expensive and trucks and SUVs aren’t exactly mileage kings, resulting in stagnant inventory and slow sales. There are plenty of these hulks with big rebates slapped on them; you can find local incentives on our incentive page.

Of the big incentives available, the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Nissan Pathfinder have the most car-like rides out of the bunch, although it’s not going to be like driving a comfy midsize sedan, these are still truck-based SUVs. The Pathfinder has a $3,250 cash-back rebate available. Chevrolet and GMC have a $2,000 cash-back rebate, which is really just about average, but loyalty bonuses — meaning if you trade in a 1999 or newer GM vehicle — will add an additional $4,000 cash back to the Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon.

As far ones with the best mileage, they’re all not very good, hence the reason for the big sale in the first place. The Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon get best 14/20 mpg City/Highway with two-wheel drive and 5.3-liter V-8, and the Pathfinder is rated at 15/22 mpg with two-wheel drive and 4.0-liter V-6.

I guess out of all of those, I'd go for the Nissan Pathfinder. But you'd have to be insane(ly rich) to even consider buying one of those these days.

I drive about 50 miles per day; my mid-size gets 27 mpg in mixed driving; that's $44.44/week on gas @ $4/gal. Even at 16 mpg, that's only 31 bucks more a week to drive one of those ugly lumps of metal around. I can save a lot more bringing my own lunch and drinking coffee i brew myself.

as much as i don't like how most people drive around these big pathetic excuses for motor vehicles without hauling anything or anyone else 90% of the time, the shock of gas costs are partly psychological. people will get used to it in a few months.
