First off, we have to mention that there’s a difference between whether a vehicle requires or recommends premium fuel. Many luxury midsize SUVs recommend premium, but you may be able to get away with using regular if the manufacturer says it’s OK. Typically, filling up a car like this with regular will decrease engine performance.

Most luxury SUVs, like the BMW X3 and X6, Infiniti EX35 and Lexus RX 350, require or recommend premium fuel. However, there are luxury midsize SUVs that recommend filling up with regular grade gasoline, meaning there’s no dealing with the “recommend” or “require” gray area. These include the Lincoln MKX, Saab 9-7X and Volvo XC90; the MKX and XC90 are Cars.com Best Bets.
