There are a few SUVs with a 2,500-pound towing capacity or more that will return decent fuel economy — though not likely while towing. The included SUVs are compacts models, however.

Cars.com’s Best Bets that fit the requirements include the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. To reach that capacity, you first need to choose a V-6 model, then option it with an available tow package. Otherwise, towing capacity is only 2,000 pounds.

A front-wheel-drive RAV4 with a V-6 is rated at 19/27 mpg city/highway, while a FWD Escape with a V-6 is 18/24. All-wheel-drive models return fuel economy that’s about 1-2 mpg less than FWD models.
