Which small hybrid SUVs offer the latest safety features, such as stability control?

Other than the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute Hybrid, are there any small hybrid SUVs that offer the latest safety features, such as stability control?

Ford’s trio of hybrid SUVs includes the Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute, which all ride on the same platform and are very similar to each other. They do not offer an electronic stability system, however. A similarly sized hybrid with stability system is the 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line where it comes standard. The Vue is a bit larger than the Escape, but is still smaller than, say, a Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

The Ford trio and the Vue do, however, share other standard safety features, such as antilock brakes, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags.

As far as crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety classifies the Escape, Mariner and Tribute as small SUVs, while the Vue is a midsize SUV. Because of the classification differences, you should avoid directly comparing crash tests.

The Vue does, however, drive away with IIHS’ Top Safety Pick designation for scoring the agency’s highest possible rating in frontal-, side- and rear-impact crash tests and for having a standard stability system, all of which are requirements for earning the title.
