The 2008 Toyota RAV4 has both side-impact and side curtain airbags, and both come as standard equipment.

Side-impact airbags typically deploy from the seat; on the RAV4 they deploy from the side bolster area to protect the chest. Side curtain airbags deploy down from the roofline to prevent front and rear passengers’ heads from hitting the side window or door during an accident.

Other standard safety equipment on the RAV4 includes an electronic stability system, antilock brakes and traction control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the RAV4 its best rating, Good, in front and side tests, but it scored Marginal in rear tests.
