Crash-test organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety test models that represent a large portion of new-car sales, or the more popular models in an automaker’s lineup.
That means you’ll see every mainstream vehicle tested, but not necessarily higher-end luxury models like the 7 Series. In BMW’s lineup, the higher-volume 3 Series and X5 have been tested by both organizations; the 7 Series has not been.
