Do I need to break in my Jeep Liberty for towing?

I have a 2007 Jeep Liberty, manual transmission, with 7,000 miles on it that I bought new last summer. I now want to tow a trailer that weighs about 1,000 pounds. Hitch is Class 2. Owner’s manual states: "During the first 500 miles of trailer-towing, limit your speed to 50 mph." Do I have to do this? Why? Thanks.

Gretchen, Danielson, Conn.

The owner’s manual isn’t exactly a place where you’ll find irrelevant information. You should follow this recommendation even though you already have 7,000 miles on your Liberty. We contacted Jeep, and its engineers say the axle needs this break-in procedure when there’s additional load caused by the trailer, which will change axle loading and wear patterns.
