The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives its Top Safety Pick award to vehicles that pass all crash tests with its highest rating. Small SUVs that earned the pick include the Honda CR-V, Honda Element and Subaru Forester. Along with solid crash-test performance, IIHS requires the car to have an electronic stability system to receive Top Safety Pick status. The CR-V and Element have electronic stability systems standard, while the Forester only has the feature on turbo models with the automatic transmission.
One step up in size, midsize SUVs like the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano and Saturn Vue also received Top Safety Pick status.
