The entry-level Evolution X GSR has a five-speed manual transmission, but the MR, which will be available later this spring, will have a six-speed “automatic” transmission.

You can say the Evo MR’s transmission is automatic in the same way you can call a nuclear aircraft carrier a boat. Yes, it has a transmission that can drive in auto-only mode, but it’s much different than, say, the four-speed automatic in your minivan. Mitsubishi calls its transmission a Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission.

The Evo’s transmission is a clutchless automated manual, which shifts much faster than any manual transmission driver could. The Evo can shift in automatic mode like a regular automatic transmission, but you can also control shifting through a plus/minus gate on the gear selector or with paddle shifters.

Automated manual transmissions are also used in the 2009 Nissan GT-R and 2008 Volkswagen R32 performance cars.
