What is the long term reliability of the Toyota Highlander and Buick Enclave?

Looking at a 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited loaded, which handles a little loose, or a Buick Enclave, which is very quiet and has more room behind the third row. Is there a difference in long-term reliability? They are close in price.

Liz J., Midlothian, Va.

It’s hard to gauge the long-term reliability of two completely new models. The Enclave is an all-new model for 2008, and the 2008 Highlander has been redesigned, inside and out. Consumer Reports hasn’t ranked the reliability of either of these new SUVs yet.

Redesigned models often have minor problems that are eventually ironed out, so looking at a model’s previous reliability ratings can mean squat.

As for automakers, Buick and Toyota score in the top 10 of both J.D. Power’s dependability and Consumer Reports’ reliability surveys. Toyota has suffered a reliability hit in some models and its ranking has dropped in both surveys compared to previous years.
