I read about the smart cars, and I was wondering how fast they go. Someone told me they only do 30 mph — is that true?
The Smart ForTwo doesn’t exactly look like a speed demon, but it is entirely capable of breaking the 30 mph speed limit, and we’ve seen previous-generation Smart models on U.S. highways keeping up with 55-plus mph traffic just fine. Smart says the ForTwo — which is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2008 — has an electronically-limited top speed of 90 mph.

I think the smart car is pretty fast for its size. One reason they probably couldn`t get more speed is they need more room for the engine. But, the cars design is really sporty and good

I would like to suggest to eweryone living far away from EUROPE to test drive a Samrt car.
The car is really fast.It has a high tech engine and general lay out is definitely mind blowing modern.
It is that sort of experience ,driving a Smart ,that takes you a couple of weeks to realize.
In my opinion it is the car we all need in 2008.It is
state of the art tecnology.
As an owner of a US spec ForTwo for a few months now, I assure you that the smart is highway speed capable and then some! 75mph is not a problem and it seems to like a constant higher speed (at least the transmission does). The first day that I got it I approached the interstate with trepidation, fearing merging into high speed traffic. When I got into lane and glanced at the speedometer, I actually thought the needle fell off of the spedometer! It was below the 100mph marking and I didn't believe it until I realized that I was flying through traffic.
It is highly subject to cross winds and blows about easily on the highway at speed which can be unnerving, especially in bad weather or passing a semi. Definately tops 30, though, lol and I've been getting almost 50 mpg.
I own a smart car, I have had it up to about 95 mph once or twice. It does take a while to get up that high, but is very stable, and comfortable at high speed. The only thing I noticed is cross winds effect it similar to a large suv.
because of power to wieght ratio the smart 1l engine is as fast as a v6 car. its just electronically limited at a certian speed about 90 i think
i am 12 and when i turn 16 and get a permit i would love to get one i have to do some research on it so i might be able to get one cause i do research this is helpful infomation
Smart cars are crap, get a mans car. I'm looking for a car for my daughter. I would not embarress her with a tiny Christmas cracker joke
bull hey go 275 mph
Smart car is the gayest looking car if u are male then and you drive this then you need to go to a football game or something
i cant imagine americans would want a smart car ... to fat
I have had my SMART Cabriolet for about 60-days and have made two interstate drives from Nashville to Atlanta. In both cases - there was no problem with keeping up with the traffic. As a matter of fact, I have to watch my "foot" to keep from exceeding the posted speed limits. I have been averaging around 45-48 mpg. Unlike the gentlemen who said he wouldn't embarass his daughter by giving her a SMART car - several of my friends agree it would be a perfect 1st car. Reason: your child can only get 1 other passenger in the car and it would definitely cut down on the "distractions' that cause so many teenage accidents when they load as many friends as they can in a larger car.
i am looking for my first car and i think that it is a perfect car. unlike the man who said he wouldnt get it for his daughter i cant wait to be seating in the driver seat. thats whats wrong with most people there not open to change.

Its' too bad that folks don't like the smart car. With General Motors and Chrysler going down the tubes, it may be the shape of things to come. As long as the Smart Car comes with some type of manual transmission, its' size ain't important. Too many automatic, dinosaur-sized gas suckers are out there!!!
hey this is christina and i am 15 and its about time for me to start looking for a car.can somebody tell me if this would be a good car to get for my b-day.

Smart car? CRap car it does NOT go over 60 mph & when it does it sakes, it can't get out of the way of traffic & People who think Europe has it right , try emigrating over there
haha you secluded red necks who beat on a piece of technology just because your obviously to stupid to even test drive the thing ive owned my smart car for bout a month have no problems getting up to max speed of 90mph in the thing as the motor is rated at over 80 horse and it has a turbo built in stock..... learn somthing about a car before you make dumb a$$ remarks i recently owned a 1992 geo metro lsi conv. and this blows the stock specs of that car away fyi. i dropped a new 3 cylinder long block suzukie swift motor with turbo into the car as a class project def. uped my power but not even close to the power this car has to offer i resold it for 5 grand in like new condition and put a nice payment on my smart car! this little car is great with air ride suppension and climate control power roof and power steering all for around 18 grand brand new! the motor and drive train both have 150k or 5 year warrenty i was just simply amazed at all that was included compared to a yukon i was also looking at 25k to start and i had to roll down my window with a manual roller no power option or notting i think the facts are as stated either you want it or not dont make it look bad cause you cant afford it........ from the mind of a ase certified auto tech!
