Jason W., Detroit

We currently have around 300 (301, to be exact) models listed in our database, and there are still new models rolling in just about every other day; for 2007, we listed 336 models. The 2008 model year sees a new automaker (Smart), as well as new models like the Volvo C30, Mini Clubman, Nissan Rogue and Audi A5 — among others — that didn’t exist in 2007. We estimate when all the info is collected there should be around 340-plus distinct models for the 2008 model year.

301!!!!!!!!!!
Geeze. No wonder I'm always getting the Sierra and Yukon mixed up.

Are these numbers based on VIN data? It seems a little low to me.

The number is reflective of how many models are available for sale; for example, the Audi A6, A4 and A8 are three distinct models; it doesn't reflect how many units of each model are sold.
