As of right now, there is one hybrid sport utility vehicle that can seat six or more: The Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The 2007 Highlander Hybrid — and redesigned 2008 version (available in October) — can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third row. Pricing for the 2007 Highlander Hybrid starts at $32,490 for a front-wheel drive model; 2008s start at $33,700 and only come with all-wheel drive. The third row costs an extra $540 in the 2007 model. The 2008 has a third-row seat tied to a package with other options, named “Popular Package,” but its price isn’t available yet. Gas mileage for the 2007 Highlander Hybrid is rated at 28/25 (city/highway) using the EPA’s 2008 rating system.

In the coming months, however, two more hybrid SUVs will be released that can carry six or more people: the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and the GMC Yukon Hybrid. Both hybrids will be available with a third-row seat, as are their gasoline counterparts. The GM twins are much larger SUVs and will offer more interior room, but their mileage won’t be as good — although claims of 19-20 mpg for trucks as large, heavy and aerodynamically challenged as those two are pretty good.
