That's a great question, and one I've personally thought of myself, seeing as the base Charger is a roomy sedan with a decent amount of power — 250 hp — and aggressive looks. The Fusion has less power but looks equally good, while being a bit on the smaller side.
The big difference in my eyes is where the power is going. The Charger is a rear-wheel-drive car and the Fusion is front-wheel drive. That makes the Charger feel even more like a muscle car, even though there isn't a Hemi under the hood. Mileage is almost identical for both cars.
What might sway most buyers, however, is the interior and quality. Both interiors could be better, with the edge going slightly to the Fusion. But because of the Charger’s muscle-car attitude, I don't ding its Spartan interior as much as the one in the Chrysler 300C.
The big negative for the Charger is its quality ratings with J.D. Power, which are average or below average for initial quality, or problems encountered in the first 90 days of ownership. The Fusion scores much better in the test, ranking average or above average in every category.
If I had to flip the coin, practicality would probably win out and the Fusion would be in my driveway. But it's a close call.
