What's a good car for first time drivers?

What are some features that make a good first car, and what cars make the cut?

Ryan, Marietta, Ga.

Safety features play a big part in what vehicles we recommend for young drivers, and just about every car we recommend has side airbags as either standard or optional equipment. Our Young Drivers Guide is dedicated to advice for young drivers, and a list of new and used cars we recommend can be found in the section, linked below. For a first-time driver, midsize cars — especially the best-selling ones — are a smart choice because they’re safe, reliable and not as dorky as an old hand-me-down station wagon. We also understand that cost is important, and many of our recommended new cars are on the small side for that reason.
